Republican Women of Baltimore County Support President Trump’s Executive Order Defunding NPR and PBS Based on Local Experience

Baltimore County, MD – May 5, 2025 — The Republican Women of Baltimore County (RWBC) officially announce their support for President Donald J. Trump’s Executive Order to end taxpayer funding of NPR (National Public Radio) and PBS (Public Broadcasting Service). This support is rooted in the organization’s firsthand experience with biased treatment by public radio during a recent broadcast on WYPR 88.1.

On May 31, 2023, RWBC President Jolie McShane and Jeff McDonald President of the Patriot Club of America appeared on WYPR 88.1 to address public concern regarding pornographic and obscene materials in public school libraries. Joining them on the program was Deborah Caldwell-Stone, Director of the Office of Intellectual Freedom at the American Library Association (ALA).

Rather than a balanced dialogue, the segment became what McShane and McDonald described as an ambush by WYPR and the ALA, giving disproportionate time and attention to the left-leaning ALA. Of the roughly 40 minutes of discussion (excluding commercial breaks), the ALA representative was given 33 minutes, while McShane and McDonald were allowed only seven minutes to voice their perspectives. President Trump’s Executive Order affirmed:

“Americans have the right to expect that if their tax dollars fund public broadcasting at all, they fund only fair, accurate, unbiased, and nonpartisan news coverage. No media outlet has a constitutional right to taxpayer subsidies, and the Government is entitled to determine which categories of activities to subsidize.” The White House stated that NPR and PBS had received "tens of millions of dollars in taxpayer funds each year to spread radical, woke propaganda disguised as “news.”

The central issue in the WYPR discussion—sexually explicit books in school libraries—was largely overshadowed by a pre-framed narrative on "book banning." McShane and McDonald intended to highlight real concerns from parents, but their opportunity was minimized by what they describe as partisan editorial control. In an obvious ambush by WYPR and the extreme left leaning American Library Association, the two representatives from local right leaning clubs were attacked by “biased and partisan news coverage.”

RWBC also raised concerns about the role of the American Library Association, particularly under the leadership of Emily Drabinski, a self-described "Marxist lesbian." NBC News Article. According to a Moms for Liberty testimony delivered in Annapolis, Maryland, the ALA is facilitating a coordinated national effort to introduce sexually explicit books into school libraries. The same titles are being promoted across multiple states, further raising questions about agenda-driven policies. RWBC Commentary on ALA Leadership

The Republican Women of Baltimore County unequivocally support President Trump’s Executive Order to defund NPR and PBS. Federal funding should not support media entities that fail to uphold impartiality and instead promote ideologically driven narratives under the guise of public service.

The experience of RWBC and the Patriot Club of America on WYPR 88.1 highlights the growing concerns among conservative Americans about bias in publicly funded media. We stand firm in our commitment to protecting children, defending parental rights, and supporting media accountability.
