When a California high school girl confided to her teacher that she believed she was a boy, the teacher reported the comment to a school counselor. Instead of providing support or involving the parent constructively, the school confronted the girl’s mother—demanding she affirm her daughter’s sudden gender confusion. Faced with an impossible choice, the mother refused to confirm the lie. The result was devastating: the state removed her child from her custody.
That is when the Pacific Justice Institute (PJI) stepped in.
PJI provided the mother with free legal representation and stood firmly by her side through a long, grueling court battle. Ultimately, justice prevailed—her daughter was returned home. This case, which unfolded in California, is one of many examples of a growing national trend in which parental rights are overshadowed by state intervention.
A National Mission to Defend Parental Rights and Religious Freedom
The Pacific Justice Institute exists for moments like these. Their mission is clear:
As a legal non-profit, our mission is to defend—without charge—the religious freedoms, parental rights, and other civil liberties of people who cannot defend themselves. We work diligently to provide our clients with dedicated, exceptional legal support completely funded by our generous supporters.
Since 2020, PJI has expanded rapidly—from 4 states with 6 offices to operating in 29 states with 36 offices nationwide. This explosive growth reflects the rising demand for legal defense in cases involving parental rights, religious liberty, workplace discrimination, church protections, and more.
A Small Sampling of PJI’s Work
PJI takes on cases no one else will touch—and they never charge a fee. Their attorneys have represented clients in:
Mandatory workplace vaccine disputes
Church and ministry rights
Parental-rights conflicts in public schools
Religious discrimination cases
Constitutional freedoms cases that align with their mission
This is not a PJI case but it is super important to parental rights: Here in Maryland, a recent monumental victory at the U.S. Supreme Court, winning against the Montgomery County School Board on behalf of parents seeking to opt out of sexual-content curriculum they found objectionable.

Bringing Awareness to Communities Nationwide
PJI is on a mission to make families aware that free legal help exists. Churches, civic groups, and community organizations—including the Republican Women of Baltimore County—are helping spread that message.
