Maryland – November 2, 2024 – The Maryland Board of Elections (BOE) has received reports of potential issues with ballot-marking devices (BMDs) at certain voting locations in the state. According to citizen reports, four voters—two in Ocean City (Worcester County), one in PG County and one in Urbana (Frederick County)—have experienced issues where machines inaccurately recorded their votes. We do not yet know if this error was the result of machine error or voter error.

The Maryland BOE is urged to act quickly and meaningfully in response to these reports to maintain public confidence in the election process.

Voter Beware! Confusion over Ballot Marking Device Multiple Page Contests

Certain contests have more than one page of choice selections. As well, in the event a voter accidentally selects more than one choice for a contest where only one choice is allowed, the second choice selected will automatically de-select the original selection. For this reason, a voter must review their final selection sheets before printing to prevent a voting error. A visual example of this is offered on the State Board of Elections here: https://elections.maryland.gov/press_room/rumor_control.html

Call for Immediate Action: Machine Calibration Check Across Voting Sites

This is a developing situation and we do not yet fully understand what is causing these errors. It is imperative that the BOE take immediate, visible action to determine if these errors were caused by voter or machine error. If it is determined to be machine error, we call on the BOE to implement a comprehensive review and calibration check at each voting location across Maryland or take the machines offline all together.

A Transparent and Thorough Review Needed

Maryland citizens deserve a thorough investigation and transparent communication about any steps taken to address these issues. We urge the BOE to prioritize this matter and to release a detailed report of findings once the investigation is complete.

For further updates on this situation, Maryland voters can contact the BOE hotline or visit the official BOE website. We are committed to keeping Marylanders informed and confident that their votes are accurately counted and protected.
