One Meme, Powerful Retaliation: What Does This Say About Free Speech at the Baltimore County Board of Education?
Righteous anger is percolating within me over a recent event that occurred here in Baltimore County. My anger stems from the awareness that there are elements afoot that seek to squash freedom of speech.
I witnessed a mother who happens to represent her district on the Baltimore County Board of Education (BOE) be silenced and forced to apologize for posting a meme on social media. Her meme simply stated a question that sought to inspire reflection (and possibly some research) in comparing the MAGA movement to Sharia Law.
What was most striking was the ire and intense retaliation she had to bear by the powers that be. Those who came after her were representatives of the State legislature; Zainab Chaudry, the Maryland Director for CAIR (Council on American-Islamic Relations); Baltimore County Democratic Central Committee member (Shazia Shah); Maryland Legislative Caucus Chair Delegate and others.
When I saw the credentials and positions of the wealth of power that came against one lone delegate on the BOE the first thought I had was, ‘wow...she must be over some target!’
I located the meme in question which set in motion my own deeper reflection on the process I was witnessing in front of me. How could one simple meme cause such a rousing of retaliation? What hornets’ nest just got poked? Additionally, and more significantly is what has happened to civil discourse and disagreement? Have we, as a society of formerly critical thinkers, become such delicate beings that the slightest statement of provocation should unravel sane minds?!
I need to write out my concerns here, because the same ‘powers that be’ that silenced a lone board member would consider me an islamaphobe. They would label me a hater. However, I will not allow them to silence me also, because I believe I speak for masses of American patriots.
I have three issues I want to address (and hopefully have readers consider and think about) are the following:
· What ever happened to open discourse?
Have we become incapable of critical thinking because of immediate sound bites (as a form of communication through social media, texts)? Is AI contracting our ability to think on our own independent process?
A meme is posted. It posed an issue to consider. Why couldn’t there be a sane back and forth discussion? Whatever happened to a discourse the respectfully offered alternative views? What about agreeing to disagree? How about simply sharing specific reasons for the stated concerns? But no. Instead, it was demanded to be removed, and the originator of the post was nearly crucified.
I understand that a public servant with a platform may need to tread carefully when posting on social media. I also understand that the onslaught that fell upon this person is part of a larger orchestrated design. The design is to make an example of her and thereby intimidate others to step up and speak out. Intimidate people and shut down any discourse or healthy conversation by referring to it as “hate speech”. We have become a society that recoils from such confrontations, and I have a growing righteous anger about that. Where are our voices?! What happened to our American backbone!
· Why did the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) have to jump into this quagmire?
Why do any concerns over Sharia Law get shut down over accusations of islamophobia? What is behind the fears and concerns over Sharia Law?
Parents of Baltimore County elected this board member. What right does CAIR have to step in and demand a resignation if their demands are not met?
Representative Chip Roy, Chairman of the Subcommittee of the Constitution and Limited Government/Committee on the Judiciary stated on Feb 18, 2026, that CAIR is an Islamist organization that actively associates with other Islamist and Sharia Law supporting groups like Hamas and the Muslim Brotherhood (that have been labeled as a terrorist organizations).
Where is the outrage that a CAIR representative is attacking and demanding restitution from one of our elected board members? This blurring of boundaries between an independent political organization and a local school board and the democratic caucus should raise red flags for all who hold free speech as sacred.
Shazia Shah stated in her testimony that now she ‘associates the board member in question with MAGA’. I ask...why is that stated as if it were a problem? I have concerns that a Baltimore County Democratic Central Committee member just implied that MAGA was a bad thing. What is wrong with Making America Great Again? And why did Shazia Shah state in a social media post on 7/12/26 that Lindsay Graham should ‘burn in hell’? Why does it appear from a social media post that she is in support of Abdul El-Sayed running for Senator in Michigan? He is an outspoken Muslim who aligns himself with Sharia Law (view latest Fox News interview with Jesse Watters). It appears that she makes provocative social media statements and experience no push back from the powers that be?
I ask the Baltimore County Democratic Central Committee....why do you want a member who supports Sharia Law? Is the liberal Democratic State Caucus aligning itself with Sharia Law minded representation? That, my friends, is an important concern to consider.
I ask readers...do you not see what is happening here? As increasingly more extremist Islam/Sharia Law leaning people are appointed or elected into government positions, their voices and their negative influence, which is counter to the American Constitution and our Judeo-Christian foundation and values, will begin to permeate all we hold dear. Just to name two: our freedom of speech and the education that our children receive.
The fundamentalist/extremist Islamic religion aligns itself with the liberal progressive movement to get a foothold into our precious liberty and freedoms here in America. These two movements seek to destroy our freedom of speech.
I watched in disgust as these powers that be, shut down the lone voice in the wilderness of a board member who encouraged Americans to learn about the difference between Conservative American values and Fundamentalist Sharia Law. The narrative of the attack on this person was that it was promoting islamophobia. It conflated her meme into representing it as an attack on the Muslim faith and not Sharia Law like it stated.
· Do Baltimore County parents really want a board that seeks to immediately squash conversation and discourse?
How might that approach to conflict trickle down into the school programs and curriculum? Learning how to have healthy debate and critical thinking will be compromised.
An example of how the progressive agenda is ‘dumbing down’ our children is something as simple and important as the written word. I watch as the school system deemed cursive handwriting as obsolete. What they promote is that children can type and go digital instead.
Cursive writing is like an individual’s fingerprint. It identifies them (even in courts of law).
Children stare at screens with significantly less group interaction and dialogue and discourse. Children are encouraged to use AI rather than their own creative God given minds. The dumbing down of our next generations.
Ask AI to give ideas on how to solve a conflict or speak into a debate. Increasingly, children will lose the confidence and ability to tap their own brains for answers.
Curiosity and critical thinking go out the window.
Dull the intellect and it becomes easier to control and indoctrinate. Lead the sheep into whatever pasture you want them to stay. Fence them in with intimidation and fear.
